GREAT ART - The Ephebe

Ephebos  (often in the plural epheboi), also anglicised as ephebe (plural: ephebes)  or archaically ephebus (plural: ephebi), is aGreek word for an adolescent age group  or a social status reserved for that age in Antiquity.

The Ephebe, or young boy, is a recurring theme in art, although particualrly associated with Greek, (Hellenic), and Hellinistic sculpture, reliefs and vase painting.
In Europe, after the fall of Rome, interest in the ephebe as a subject for art (along with the nude in general) declined until the Renaissance.
There was a further neglect of the subject in the Baroque and Rocco period, but the subject was favoured one again in the 19th Century and continues to interest artists right up to the present day.

These (rather pathetic) comments are taken from a blog featuring the art of Owe Zerge.

'The question, of course, is what was the artist's intent in these images of young boys, often nude ? And in art, generally, when does the depiction of youthful beauty cross the line and become something else ?  At what point does the non-graphic nude depiction of a child become exploitative ?  How old does a young person have to be before they are "safe" to portray naked: physically mature or emotionally mature or statutorily mature ?  Is the nude figure in contemporary art inherently a sexual object, or does the relative age of the sitter influence that perception?  In an era that is over-sexualized, in general - in both the Arts and in our culture - how do we make these sometimes subtle distinctions ?'

Such comments clearly show how so many people are beset by their own conflicts, anxieties and guilt regarding sexual matters.
Our advice when viewing such images is simply to appreciate them as art, and not to project one's own attitudes onto either the subject matter, or the individuals depicted.

'STUDY OF A NUDE BOY'
Christen Købke - 1810-1848

Christen Schiellerup Købke (26 May 1810 – 7 February 1848), Danish painter, was born in Copenhagen to Peter Berendt Købke, a baker, and his wife Cecilie Margrete.
Købke, a national romantic, painted portraits, landscapes and architectural paintings.
Most of Købke’s portraits show friends, family members and fellow artists.
He found most of his motifs in his immediate surroundings.
Now he is recognized internationally for his well composed and harmonic paintings, for their coloristic qualities and for his sense of the everyday life. But in his lifetime he was almost forgotten, especially because of his early death and limited production.
Despite his talent and the praise of various contemporaries, Købke had never been inundated with commissions.
Købke is recognized today as one of the most talented among Denmark’s Golden Age painters and the most internationally renowned Danish painter of his generation.
His works are in the collections of not only Danish museums but also such international museums as the J. Paul Getty Museum

'NUDE  EPHEBE  IN  HEROIC  POSE'
Georg von Hoesslin (1851-1923)

George (Georg) von Hoesslin (1851-1923) is an interesting figure in art in view of his origins and study. German by heritage, but born in Hungary and educated in the United States, after his family emigrated to North America in 1856.
In 1870 he wanted to study art and returned to Europe (München) where he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts.
In München, (Munich), he trained under Wilhelm Lindenschmit (1829 -1 895), a German history painter. He traveled to Rome and Venice for additional studies later on.
In 1880 he returned to Boston, Mass.
He made return trips to München after his return to America.
His paintings are displayed in Museums in Boston (Museum of Fine Art) and in Europe.
This drawing is not signed but has von Hoesslin's estate stamp on the reverse and came from his estate (Nachlass George Von Hoesslin stamp on the reverse).
The drawing is probably a preparatory study for an historical painting, part of his oeuvre of portraits and historical paintings.

'HORSES ON THE BEACH'
Michael Peter Ancher - 1849-1927

Michael Peter Ancher (June 9, 1849 – September 19, 1927) was a Danish impressionist artist.
He is most associated with his paintings of fishermen and other scenes from the Danish port of Skagen.
His paintings are classics and he is probably one of Denmark's most popular artists.
Michael Ancher was influenced by his traditional training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the 1870s which imposed strict rules for composition, and he found it difficult to adjust to Scandinavian painting's modern breakthrough, the "Skagen School".
His marriage to Anna Ancher did, however, introduce him to the naturalistic concept of undecorated reproduction of reality and its colours.
By combining the pictorial composition of his youth with the teachings of naturalism, Michael Ancher created what has been called modern monumental figurative art s.
The works of Michael Ancher can be seen at the Skagen Museum, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Frederiksborg Museum, The Hirschsprung Collection and Ribe Art Museum.
Michael Ancher received the Eckersberg Medal in 1889 and in 1894 the Order of the Dannebrog.

Rudolf Koller

Rudolf Koller (1828–1905) was a Swiss painter.
Koller was born the son of a butcher and innkeeper from Schaffhausen.
Koller studied in Zürich under such artists as Johann Jakob Ulrich before going to Dusseldorf in 1846 to work with Carl Ferdinand Sohn.
In 1847 he was in Paris where he shared a studio with Arnold Bocklin.
Two years later he went to Munich where he worked with a group of artists called the Schweizer, whose leader was Johann Gottfried Steffan.
He returned to Zürich in 1851 and painted mainly pastoral landscapes (e.g. Waterfall near Zürich, 1851) evoking prevailing romantic sensibilities.
His later paintings combine realist subject-matter with a carefully arranged and executed classical composition.
He frequently chose rustic farm scenes containing animals, whom he believed represented a dignified and pure image of nature that was to be treated with respect.
He was often considered to be the 19th-century counterpart to Paulus Potter whose paintings of animals were emulated at the time. His works are similar to those of Rosa Bonheur.
After 1870, problems with his eyesight forced him to paint less, yet even late in life he was still capable of producing such lyrical paintings as 'Horses at the Drinking Fountain' (1890).
With Frank Buchser and Gustave Castan he worked diligently to advance the status of Swiss painters in the second half of the 19th century.
1905 Rudolf Koller died in Hornau. His tomb is in Zurich next to that of Gottfried Keller.
Part of Koller's estate, such as letters, memoirs and notebooks are in the Manuscript Department of the Central Library of Zurich .

Franz Stuck (1863-1928)

Franz Stuck (February 24, 1863 - August 30, 1928) was a German symbolist/Art Nouveau painter, sculptor, engraver, and architect.
Stuck was born at Tettenweis, in Bavaria.
From an early age he displayed an affinity for drawing and caricature.
To begin his artistic education in 1878 he went to Munich, where he would settle for life.
From 1881 to 1885 Stuck attended the Munich Academy.
He first made a name with cartoons for Fliegende Blätter, and vignette designs for programmes and book decoration.
In 1889 he exhibited his first paintings at the Munich Glass Palace, winning a gold medal for The Guardian of Paradise.
In 1892 Stuck co-founded the Munich Secession, and also executed his first sculpture, Athlete. The following year he won further acclaim with the critical and public success of what is now his most famous work, The Sin. Also in 1893, Stuck was awarded a gold medal for painting at the Chicago World's Fair and was appointed to a royal professorship.
In 1895 he began teaching painting at the Munich Academy.
In 1897 Stuck married an American widow, Mary Lindpainter, and began work designing his own residence and studio, the Villa Stuck.
His designs for the villa included everything from layout to interior decorations; for his furniture Stuck received another gold medal at the 1900 Paris World Exposition.Having attained a high degree of fame by this time, Stuck was elevated to the aristocracy on December 9, 1905 and would receive further public honours from around Europe during the remainder of his life.
Even as new trends in art left Stuck behind, he continued to be highly respected among young artists in his capacity as professor at the Munich Academy.
Notable students of his over the years include Paul Klee, Hans Purrmann, Wassily Kandinsky, and Josef Albers.
Franz von Stuck died in 1928; his funeral address memorialized him as "the last prince of art of Munich's great days". He is buried in the Munich Waldfriedhof next to his wife Mary.

JOAQUIN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA  (1863-1923)

Gertrude Käsebier

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (27 February 1863 – 10 August 1923) was a Spanish painter.
Sorolla excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes, and monumental works of social and historical themes.
His most typical works are characterized by a dexterous representation of the people and landscape under the sunlight of his native land.
Joaquin Sorolla was the eldest child born to a tradesman, also named Joaquin, and his wife, Concepcion Bastida. His sister, Concha, was born a year later.
In August 1865 both children were orphaned when their parents died, possibly from cholera. They were thereafter cared for by their maternal aunt and uncle.
He received his initial art education, at the age of fourteen, in his native town, and then under a succession of teachers including Cayetano Capuz, Salustiano Asenjo.
At the age of eighteen he traveled to Madrid, vigorously studying master paintings in the Museo del Prado.
After completing his military service, at twenty-two Sorolla obtained a grant which enabled a four year term to study painting in Rome, Italy, where he was welcomed by and found stability in the example of F. Pradilla, the director of the Spanish Academy in Rome.
A long sojourn to Paris in 1885 provided his first exposure to modern painting; of special influence were exhibitions of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Adolf von Menzel.
Back in Rome he studied with Jose Benlliure, Emilio Sala, and Jose Villegas.

Charles Adrian Scott Stokes RA

Charles Adrian Scott Stokes RA (1854-1935) was an English painter.

He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1872 and exhibited at the Academy from 1876.
In that year went to France where he lived for 10 years, settling back in England in 1886, at Carbis Bay and joining the artists' colony at St Ives.Adrian Stokes was a landscape painter, concerned most with atmospheric effects, and later with decorative landscapes.
He was the author of 'Landscape Painting' (1925).
He became ARA in 1909 and RA in 1919, won medals at the Paris Exhibition and Chicago World Fair (1889), became first President of the St Ives Society of Arts (1890) and Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society (1932).

She became a well known artist under her married name of Marianne Stokes.
An obituary of Adrian Stokes was published in The Times Monday 2 December 1935

'STUDY  OF  A  NUDE  BOY'
Julian Alden Weir - (1852-1919)

Julian Alden Weir (August 30, 1852 – December 8, 1919) was an American impressionist painter and member of the Cos Cob Art Colony near Greenwich, Connecticut. Weir was also one of the founding members of "The Ten", a loosely-allied group of American artists dissatisfied with professional art organizations, who banded together in 1898 to exhibit their works as a stylistically unified group.
Weir was born on August 30, 1852 and raised in West Point, New York, the son of painter Robert Walter Weir, a professor of drawing at the Military Academy at West Point who taught such artists as James Mcneill Whistler. His older brother, John Ferguson Weir, also became a well-known landscape artist who also painted in the styles of the Hudson River and Barbizon schools. He was professor of painting and design at Yale University from 1869, starting the first academic art program on an American campus.
His works as a young artist centered on still life and the human figure, which he rendered in a realist style not unlike the work of Édouard Manet.
His style varied from traditional, vibrant impressionism to a more subdued and shadowy tonalism. He also became skilled at etching. As a rule, his paintings done after 1900 showed a renewed interest of the academicism prevalent in the work of his younger days, with subjects treated less realistically and a greater emphasis placed on drawing and design.
In 1912 Weir was selected the first president of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, but resigned a year later following the association's sponsorship of the modernist Armory Show. Weir later became president of the National Academy of Design.
He died in 1919.
